You might find this hard to believe, but this is actually the second can suit I have made. The first one I made was in my sophomore year at NYU for a short film I was doing. I bought a bag of cans off a bum for $30 bucks, and washed the cans out in my dorm bathroom. (Much to my roommates horror.) I was on my hands and knees killing cockroaches that came skittering out of the cans with my sneakers.
My friend Chad De Miguel wore it around town, and he was a big hit. Everyone made him stop for pictures and autographs. As we were heading back, this overtly-excited man jumped out of a taxi and accosted us on the sidewalk. (It turned out to be Jim Rado, the creator of the musical, Hair.) He asked me to sell him the suit of cans. I didn't think he was serious, so I told him that I'd sell it for $500. Amazingly, he agreed. He told me he'd pick it up the next day, he just wanted me to put it in two garbage bags for him.
Because I kinda wanted to keep the suit, I secretly fantasized about filling up two garbage bags with the extra empty cans I had from the bum, but my girlfriend at the time convinced me not to. I wonder if he ever took the suit out of the bag?
Anyway, my friend Miller Koepenick wore the suit this time and did a fantastic job. I think I lost about 15 IQ points because I spraypainted the suit indoors without a mask. Because the suit was already done, it was super hard and it took forever to cover all of the aluminum up (Most of the paint flaked off anyway). If I ever have to make another can suit, I'm painting the damn cans first.
The two music tracks are "Doowah Diddy" by 2 Live Crew and Mantronix's "Listen to the Bass." My friend Mike Dillenberger did some sound editing on the Doowah track
